“Chevy” began entertaining hockey fans in Rhode Island rinks at an early age. The Rhode Island native was a highly sought after recruit out of Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, who opted to stay close to home to play college hockey and star for the Bears.

As a freshman, Derek appeared in all 29 games for the Bears, making an immediate impact on the team. He was Brown’s fifth leading scorer as a rookie, while tying for second place in assists. His career would take off after his freshman campaign.

In his sophomore season, Derek played in all 27 games and led the team in assists with 21, and ranked second in overall points with 27. His two-way play earned him tremendous respect from his coaches, teammates, and Brown fans.

As a junior, Derek earned numerous honors for a stellar season. The Bears captured the Ivy League Championship, and Derek was named a Second Team All-ECAC All-Star, while earning First Team All-Ivy accolades. Derek posted impressive numbers on the season, scoring 42 points in 30 games. He finished 4th in the ECAC in scoring, tallying 38 points in 22 games, while leading the Ivy League with 22 points in 10 games.

In his senior season, Derek was named a co-captain and led the Bears to a 16-11-3 overall record and an NCAA Tournament berth, the fourth NCAA Playoff appearance in Brown hockey history.  He earned Second Team All-Ivy recognition, and helped pace the Bears to an ECAC Championship game appearance, where the Bears earned a runner-up finish. He was also named an Honorable Mention All-ECAC selection.

Derek played an integral role in developing a new era in Brown hockey, and was a key cog in turning the program around. Known as a smart player, with excellent hockey sense, Derek ranks second on Brown’s all-time career assists list, with 99,  and seventh on the all-time career points list, with 133.

Derek graduated from Brown in 1993 with a BA in Business Economics and Organizational Behavior and Management. He currently serves as Vice President of Fixed Income for Institutional Sales at McDonald Investments. He and his wife, Molly, currently reside in Shaker Heights, Ohio, with their two children, Alexis and Cameron.
