Christa Champion currently is the head women's basketball coach at WPI. At Brown, Christa was an outstanding player and a leader. During her sophomore, junior and senior years, she was second team All-Ivy. During the same three years, she was also selected first team Academic All-American. Some of her school records still stand - 2nd in career points (1,393), 2nd in field goals (586), 2nd in field goal percentage (.519).
During her sophomore year Christa and her teammates won their first Ivy title. That team also set a record for most wins in a season. The following year, the team won their second Ivy title. Upon graduation, Christa was awarded an NCAA scholarship.
After Brown, Christa played basketball professionally in Ireland, leading her team in scoring and rebounding. She also competed in team handball, and in 1987 she was selected to the U.S. National Team (Olympic Training Squad) and during 1987-88 competed in international competitions in Austria, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia, Norway, and in the USA Cup II. In May of 1988 she participated in the first-ever (men's or women's) victory over the Soviets in the sport of team handball. As recently as last August she was back playing basketball with the Pasco All-Stars team and toured Poland. During last season her WPI team had an 18-8 record and advanced to the championship game of the New 8 conference, and they were selected to the ECAC Championship Tournament.
Christa, a native of Newburyport, Massachusetts, is single and currently resides in Worcester, Massachusetts.
