Joseph E. Buonanno '34 was a three-year starter at quarterback for Brown and captained the 1933 eleven. In his first game, Buonanno scored twice and gained 128 yards rushing. The 5-9, 165-pound Providence boy could pass and drop kick and was a constant scoring threat on end sweeps. But, above all, Buonanno was a pressure player. In 1932, he directed last quarter drives against Holy Cross and Columbia that turned apparent defeats into victories and kept the Bruins in the undefeated ranks. Buonanno received All-American mention and played in the North-South game. An outstanding pole vaulter, Buonanno won the New England Intercollegiate title three years running, set several Brown pole vault records, and competed in the Olympic tryouts.
