Gilbert J. Borgeson ’51 was captain of track and co-captain of football on College Hill. As a sophomore he took the New England shot-put title, but the Worcester native hadn’t won a single point in national track competition until the winter of his junior year when he won the NAAU title with a toss of 57-5 ¼. The next week he won the IC4A crown with a throw of 56-7 5/8. He was the first man in 12 years to win these two titles in one season. Borjeson won the IC4A and NCAA hammer throws as a senior, with his 180-1 5/8 only the second toss in NCAA history to exceed 180 feet. He qualified for the Olympics trials in 1952 and finished fourth. Borjeson was a regular tackle on the football team.
