Robert H. Bennett ’49 was national hammer throw champion for the University of Maine in 1940 with a heave of 183 feet 10 inches but missed a chance at the Olympics when the games scheduled for Helsinki were cancelled because of the war. At Brown, Bennett captured the National AAU title in both 1947 and 1948 and was the IC4A 35-pound weight champion. He set a Brown field record in the hammer with a toss of 179-8 and a Brown record for the 35-lb. weight at 55-8. Bennett was named New England’s outstanding athlete for 1948 and finished third in the Olympics. His Brown record: 1947 indoors – National AAU’s: 4th, 35# (52-2 ½); IC4A’s: 1st, 35# (54-11 ¾); outdoors – NE’s 1st, hammer (176-4 3/8); IC4A’s: 1st, hammer (174-10 7/8). 1948 indoors – National AAU’s: 1st, 35# (54-9 5/8); outdoors – 1st national tryouts for Olympics (hammer), 3rd in Olympics (176-3 ½).
