Brown Women's Soccer Team of 1984
Year Inducted:
2005

The 1984 Brown Women’s Soccer Team is considered by head coach Phil Pincince to be the “finest he has ever coached.”  The 1984 Bears recorded a final record of 13-1-1, falling only to the University of Connecticut in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.  The team scored 38 goals throughout the season and allowed just three, including a mere two goals in regular season play.  The 1984 Ivy League Champions featured Theresa Abrahamson, the Ivy League Player of the Year, who along with midfielder Gretchen Orr and defender Colleen O’Day, earned every possible accolade from All-Ivy to All-American.

The team was ranked number one in the nation for two consecutive weeks heading into the NCAA Tournament and ended the season ranked second. Brown went a perfect 5-0 in Ivy play and had a total of five players selected to the All-Ivy Teams.

Goalkeeper Kathy Kostic maintained a goals against average of 0.15 with 12 shutouts on the season, a record that still stands to this day. Kostic and the Brown defense posted ten straight shutouts, including scoreless showings against five of the top ten ranked teams in the country.

The Bears received the only bye in the opening round of the 1984 NCAA Tournament, but ironically lost in the quarterfinals to the only team they failed to beat during the regular season, the University of Connecticut. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie earlier in the season, but the Huskies one-upped the Bears in the quarterfinal match-up, winning by a 1-0 score. Despite the final outcome, Brown out-shot UConn 13-5 as the team received a standing ovation from the 3,000 plus crowd.

Pincince remains at the helm of the program, completing his 28th season this past fall. He is the 10th winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, compiling a career record of 245-174-30. He has recorded 19 winning seasons and has directed Brown to 12 Ivy titles and six NCAA Tournament appearances.
