Stephen Lynch arrived at Brown University in November, 2008 after a 24-year career with the Rhode Island State Police, where he retired at the rank of Major. As an Assistant Athletic Director at Brown, Lynch serves as the Sport Administrator for Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Skiing, Men’s and Women’s Water Polo, Men’s and Women’s Squash and Softball. He also has NCAA and Ivy League compliance responsibilities and assists with event management for home contests. Additionally, he sits on the University’s Public Safety Oversight Committee.

During his career with the State Police, Lynch served an unprecedented five-year period as the Division’s Detective Commander where he supervised all State Police Investigative Units and served as the Interpol Liaison for Rhode Island, a Witness Protection Board member and as a valued State Police Command Staff Member.

From 1998 to 2003, Lynch served as a Lieutenant and director of the Major Crimes unit. In 1996, as a Detective Sergeant, Lynch founded the Violent Fugitive Task Force (VFTF), which was a task force that partnered with the United States Marshals and local police department members to apprehend literally thousands of wanted felons between the present day and the time of its inception.

As a Rhode Island State Trooper, Lynch received 30 departmental commendations, but his highest honor was receipt of the State Police Service Ribbon and Lifesaver Award in 2006 after responding while off-duty to rescue two local Glocester youths from a burning car.

Lynch, a native of Rhode Island, graduated from Smithfield High School in 1978.  He received Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhode Island College where he starred as a goaltender on the soccer team in a career that resulted in his induction into the Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Fame. He now sits on the Rhode Island College Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Board.
