Brown Athletics Hosts Fifth Annual Literacy Day This Saturday

Providence, RI – For the fifth year in a row, Brown Athletics, in conjunction with the Brown Football Association, Brown Catering, and Brown University’s Delta Phi fraternity, have partnered with the Providence Public Schools to promote "Literacy Day" at Brown's October 25th football game against Cornell. Kickoff is set for 12:30 pm at Brown Stadium. The Brown Football Association is also excited to announce that Gilbane Building Company has joined this year’s event.

The event will feature students from the Providence public elementary and middle schools. Each school sets their own criteria of achievement in reading and writing. All students who qualify will receive a free game ticket, special gift, and lunch before the game. This year's event set a new record, with approximately 8,000 students reaching the goals.

"This is the fifth year of Literacy Day, and we are excited that this has become an annual tradition,” said Brown head football coach Phil Estes. “Our football team's goal is to reach out to the Providence community in a meaningful way.  We are thankful to our student-athletes for the time they put in the community and to the Brown Football Association for making this great event a reality.”

“Brown Athletics is pleased to be hosting Literacy Day for the fifth year,” said Brown director of athletics Jack Hayes. “We always try to emphasize to our student-athletes the importance of academics and athletics, and this is a great way for our football program to communicate this message to the youth of Providence.”

"The Gilbane Family and Company welcomes the opportunity to participate as an active community partner in the city of Providence and beyond in support of encouraging kids to read as much and as often as they can," says John Sinnott '80, Vice President and Business Unit Leader of Gilbane Building Company RI.  "We see the Brown Football Association's Literacy Day as an extension and enhancement of that outreach and are thrilled to be able to participate toward making a difference for the thousands of children attending Providence area schools."
