Serving the community stands as an integral part of the student-athlete experience at Brown, and each year hundreds of student-athletes and dozens of coaches spend time working towards this central part of the mission of the University. From SAAC’s “Tug for a Cure” event to football’s annual “Be The Match” registry drive to multiple teams’ visits to The Wolf School, Brown student-athletes are working to make the Providence community – and beyond – a better one.

Brown University athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee partnered to host the third annual "Tug for a Cure" on Sunday afternoon as Bear teams competed in a tug-of-war competition to raise money for the Brown University Oncology Research Group (BrUOG).

Football Hosts 13th Annual Bench Press for Cancer Event
On Monday, October 16, Brown Football will host the 13thannual Bench Press for Cancer on Brown's Main Campus Green. This event was created in 2004 to help former team captain Lawrence Rubida '05 and his family pay for the medical bills associated with his battle against Ewing's Sarcoma. Despite Lawrence's passing, his former teammates and those that have followed have lived by his credo "never quit."
Volleyball Hosts "Spike ALS" Match to Benefit ALS Association
Brown's match against Princeton on Friday at 7 p.m. will serve as the Bears' Spike ALS Match as Brown works to support research and awareness for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. The Bears will don red apparel for the match in support of the cause. ALS has affected the family of Brown head coach Diane Short. Coach Short's mother and aunt have both passed away from the disease while her brother and sister currently have ALS.

Brown Football Helps Give The Gift of Life With 8th Annual “Be The Match” Bone Marrow Donor Testing Drive
Brown head coach Phil Estes and the Bears’ Football team are once again joining collegiate football teams throughout the country in an effort to recruit new bone marrow volunteers to the “Be The Match” registry. The Bears will sponsor their Eighth Annual Bone Marrow Donor Testing Drive on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Sayles Hall, located on the main campus, from 10 am to 4 pm. The drive is open to the public and sponsored by Brown Football and the Brown Warren Alpert Medical School.

The Brown men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to form "Team Brown University" and raised $11,435 for Swim Across America – Rhode Island at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett, R.I. Vartan Gregorian Elementary School at Fox Point
Brown University athletics celebrated its 25th year in partnership with the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School with the annual kickoff event on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015.
In 1991, Brown University adopted Vartan Gregorian Elementary School at Fox Point and began a program which has grown and developed into what it is today - a mutually beneficial partnership that has received much recognition both inside Brown and within the community. The program works because student-athletes are willing to devote time to it and treat it as the special relationship that it is. Each classroom at the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School at Fox Point has a designated team who visits the classroom and volunteers their time to help the students. The Athletic Department and student-athletes also participate in three or four school-wide events each year.
